Benefits To Look For When Seeking Employment in NH

Benefits and Employment in NH

If you are looking for employment in NH, it's always good to know what kind of pay and benefits you can expect, as well as what benefits the state requires employers provide. NH has no state income or sales tax, and the cost of living is less than what you'd find in a large metropolitan area like Boston or New York. NH also has plenty of good-paying jobs; however, the state has no laws requiring employers to provide vacation time or holidays off. Beyond the federal Family Medical Leave Act, NH law does not require employers to provide employees with sick leave benefits, either paid or unpaid. That is up to each company, so if you are looking for employment in NH, you may want to keep this in mind.

Benefits: the basics

Here are some other benefits you should be looking at when seeking employment in NH.

Health insurance: Because of health care reform laws, most employers are required to offer health insurance to their employers. With health care costs rising, many employers are raising employee contributions, out-of-pocket costs, and deductibles. It helps to do a little investigating into a company's benefits and how much employees must pay for their portion of health insurance before you agree to a position.

Paid Time Off: Many corporate jobs provide ten days of paid time off for new employees, although some jobs may allow you to negotiate for more. Because paid time off is a guarantee, many companies will offer this as a perk to entice the best candidates. Whenever seeking employment in NH or elsewhere, ask how vacation time works, how it is accrued, if it is "use-it-or-lose-it" and mention any firm plans you may have coming up that require time off.

When it comes to holidays, there are six holidays that nearly all companies offer as paid holidays, however, many offer ten.

While the state Legislature has debated the issue, there is no paid family leave law in NH.

Retirement Plans: Employee-based plans are crucial when it comes to saving for retirement. Whether it's a pension plan, a 401(k) or some other plan, employer-sponsored plans offer an incentive to save because employers typically make contributions to your account.

Disability insurance: In the event you become injured outside of work, some employers offer short-term and long-term disability insurance that can help save workers from financial hardship. When seeking employment in NH, consider this benefit that is often overlooked and whether the employer will fund part or all of the premiums.
